FAQs, lessons, and resources

Welcome to r/startups, a community for all backgrounds, levels of expertise, and business experience.

What is a startup?

are designed to scale/grow rapidly. are disruptive, either via technology or business model. are information era companies and they are creating the new best practices in business.

/r/startups

We share interesting discussions and stories about our startup journeys, both the failures, the successes, and the embarrassments. Our best traits are authenticity and integrity.

We want to know who you want to ask anything!

We are working on a consistent AMA schedule. Tell us who you want to interview in that thread.

Message the mods for instructions on how to get flair verifying your experience.

1.Relevant Content Only

We are a community of discussion based around startups, not traditional businesses.

All content must be relevant to startups.

You are welcome to ask how to apply startup methodologies to your traditional business if you frame your inquiry appropriately.

2.No direct sales and/or advertisements

This is not a channel. No promotional posts. No direct sales, advertisements, or promotional posts of any kind (for yourself or others). We have designated places that are an exception to this rule and stickied at the top of /r/startups.

  • You MAY share your startup in the Monthly Share Your Startup thread

  • You MAY share in the Weekly Feedback and Support thread

Want to advertise here? www.reddit.com/wiki/selfpromotion

3.Submissions Serve a Specific Purpose Here

Submissions are for discussing methodologies, experiences, tactics, strategies, techniques, markets, and other such things WITHOUT tying them directly to your own project using its name or URL.

Titles must be clear and descriptive.

Submissions must have at least 500 of content. The more details you provide us the better support our community can provide you with. Don’t be lazy!

Submissions that do not meet this criteria is subject for removal.

4.Feedback/Direct Support Has a Place

All Feedback Requests (including surveys/polls) and Support Requests (such as hiring, asking for a list of /resources) belong in our Weekly Feedback and Support Thread, stickied at the top of /r/startups and on our Discord chatroom

You are invited to repost each week to the Weekly thread.

Be sure to contribute to the other requests in the thread and ask them to return the favor to increase your engagement.

You may not publicly offer feedback or direct support outside of the Stickied Threads.

5.Comments Are For Public Discussion Not PM Requests

The purpose of making a comment is to engage in a public discussion with the community.

It is not to request a PM from someone. It is not to start a private conversation.

If you want to start a private conversation with someone, just PM them yourself.

6.Sharing Your Blog is To Start a Discussion

Sharing your blog is not a means to self promote.

The point of this is to start a discussion HERE on the sub.

A link to the original blog post is allowed with Mod approval.

If you are submitting your own blog content, the full body of the content must be included in the post, properly formatted for reddit for reddit.

Include an outline & timestamps with a video.

If your blog is over 2000 words you may ask for an exemption.

All other rules still apply about what type of content may be posted here.

7.Resources Have a Place

Sharing tools, other communities, and similar resources belong in our Weekly Feedback and Support Thread.

You are invited to repost each week.

We also have a #resources channel on our Discord chatroom chatroom that you can utilize.

8.Be Kind and Supportive

The goal of this community is to encourage people to learn and be inspired to pursue ventures related to startups.

Do not troll, harass people, or be an asshole.

Try to remember people likely do not have much experience yet or might be simply ignorant to what you know.

Don’t needlessly be combative or taunt others. Trolls will be banned.

Be willing to hold a discussion like an adult and try to explain your opinion or point of view to the benefit of the entire community.

9.No Unscheduled AMAs

We do not allow unscheduled AMAs.

We need to verify and approve all AMAs.

If you wish to do an AMA you must use the “Message the Moderators” feature in the side bar and you must give us at least TWO (3) Weeks Lead Time to organize it with you.

If you wish to suggest someone for us to schedule an AMA with please do so here:

10.Veto Power

The mods have the final say on things. They can exercise their best judgement at any time to help make this sub more beneficial to the subscribers.

Never message a Moderator directly. Use the “Message the Moderator” feature in the side bar.

We want to document how our Mod Team interacts with you so we can work to improve the experience you have with our community.
