Use your phone to file taxes this season

The best tax season apps let you file taxes online right from your phone and keep you organized all year long.

Take a look at what’s out there and choose the app that’s right for you. Know that in the world of taxes, these services are rarely free. When you file your taxes in person you’re typically charged a fee for the service, right? A couple of the options below are no different, but we did find one free service you might want to check out.

We’ll point out some features of each and let you know where one app might get the edge up on another. Always read the app descriptions thoroughly so there aren’t any surprises in terms of fees.

For a straightforward return: TurboTax Return | Android | iOS |

Skip the line this tax season and file right from your phone with TurboTax Return.

Tax filing apps are a great option for people with relatively simple tax situations. What do we mean by a simple tax situation? Well if you work for one employer your return is going to be pretty straightforward compared to a freelancer with as many as 10 or 20 clients.

With TurboTax Return, take a picture of your W-2, answer some questions and file securely from your phone or tablet.

The app syncs across platforms so you can do your taxes on the go or at home on your desktop, whatever works for you. Let it be known: the app is going to charge you filing fees. The same as if you went into a tax preparation place.

For the self-employed: QuickBooks Self-Employed | Android | iOS |

If you’re self-employed or a freelancer, consider a financial organizing app that keeps up with your small all year long. The QuickBooks Self-Employed app preps you for tax season right out of the gate. It might not help you this year but think about how easy it will be to file next time.

The app helps you keep track of receipts, expenses, income and mileage all in one simple app. Attach a receipt to a transaction by taking a picture of it and keep all your expenses on record come tax season.

QuickBooks comes from the Intuit family (the same makers of TurboTax). You can purchase a tax bundle option so you can export your yearly QuickBooks Self-Employed data into TurboTax Self-Employed, making it so much simpler to file taxes online.

A free option: Credit Karma Taxes | Android | iOS |

To get a free filing with Credit Karma Taxes you have to get started with Credit Karma first. Credit Karma is a free app that gives you to your credit score (without affecting it) and provides transparency as to what goes into a score. They provide helpful articles and offer products like credit cards too.

Don’t forget, with any free app, you’ll want to read the privacy policy. Check out Credit Karma’s Privacy Policy before you get started. Credit Karma states on the main page of their website that they’ll “never or rent your personal information to third parties for marketing purposes” but there’s no doubt they’re in the business of information. The more data they can collect on their users, the better match for products like credit cards they can offer you.

Credit Karma offers free to file federal and state returns, “no matter what your tax situation is.” This comes with their 24/7 live chat support, and the ability to import your W-2 to keep things running smoothly in the app.
