How To Use Amazon S3 And Cloudfront With WordPress

In discussions of speeding up your website, you may have heard the term cloud computing. At its most basic level, cloud storage simply refers to uploading your site’s files, such as images, stylesheets, and other assets, to a remote server. A content delivery network, or CDN, connects to cloud storage and serves files to users across a wide network of fast servers all over the globe, to ensure the quickest download times and connection. In the cloud computing world, it is going to be hard to find a solution better than AWS (Amazon Web Services), specifically their S3 and Cloudfront services. With a quick set up, and the help of a few plugins, it’s possible to use these services to speed up your site and backup all of your files regularly, at a very low cost. But first, a quick rundown of AWS.

How To Optimize Your WordPress Workflow For Web Designers

As a freelancer, I’m free to set my own hours, take as long of a break as I want, and work as much as I want. In order to get more done though, I usually end up working more and that’s not exactly what I signed up for. That’s not what I had in mind when I set out on this journey to be my own boss.

That’s why a change in perspective is in order. Rather than working more, you can optimize your workflow. You can streamline the work you do and ultimately get more done in less time. That sounds more in like with the original freelance dream, right?

This article takes a look at the workflow of the freelance web developer and explores where things can be improved. Using a few smart steps and some good tools, you can work smarter – not harder. We’ll first look at the freelancing side of the business and then at the development side so you have a good picture of all that’s involved.

Security is always top concern when you’re running a website.

How to Show Before and After Photo in WordPress

Have you ever found yourself wanting to show the before and after shots of the same image? Usually people use Photoshop and put the images side by side. Now wouldn’t it be nice to have an interactive slider that shows the before and after shot? In this article, we will show you how to show before and after photo in WordPress without losing image sizes and quality.

First thing you need to do is install and activate the TwentyTwenty plugin. The plugin works out of the box and there are no settings for you to configure.

Simply create a new post or edit an existing one. Next, n the post edit screen you need to upload your before and after photos and insert them into post.

You must make sure that both photos have the same dimensions.

After inserting images, you need to switch to the text editor and locate the image code. Next, you need to wrap both your images into [twentytwenty][/twentytwenty] shortcode like this:

1 [twentytwenty]<img src="http://www.example.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/before-photo.jpg" alt="Before photo" width="604" height="402" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-2367" />
2 <img src="http://www.example.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/after-photo.jpg" alt="After Photo" width="604" height="402" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-2366" />[/twentytwenty]

Now you can save your changes and preview the post. You will be able to see both your images layered on top of each other with a slider in the center allowing users to slide and see before and after photos.

The first image becomes the before image on the left, and the second one becomes the after image on the right.

Before and after images inside a slider

As the users slide the handle towards each image the other image will become visible. Users can take the slider all the way to the right or the left to see the full before and after image. As the users slide the before and after labels will automatically disappear.

Sliding between before and after images

That’s all. We hope this article helped you learn how to beautifully show before and after photos on your WordPress site.

How To Add Lazy Loading To WordPress

Lazy Loading is a front-end development trick which delays the loading of content below the fold of a page until just before a user scrolls to it. You can think of it as the opposite of image preloading. It ensures that resources, especially those that carry more weight (images, videos, scripts), are only loaded when they have to be. Lazy loading can be used in a variety of different ways. You can chose to sprinkle the technique on and delay the loading of a single resource, like images, or you can implement it full-scale for your entire site with infinite scroll. In this article, we’ll talk through what lazy loading is, then go over a few ways to implement it in WordPress.

The Pros and Cons of Lazy Loading

The biggest advantage of lazy loading your content is that it makes your initial page load quite a bit faster. If the browser doesn’t have to worry about loading in every resource on your page right away, it can load the content immediately visible to a user much quicker. As the user begins to scroll, content will be loaded in.

Often, lazy loading is referred to in discussions of infinite scroll. Infinite Scroll is really an alternative to pagination. It is a technique where new content is loaded in every time a user scrolls to the bottom of the page. You’ve probably seen it on the web somewhere, on blogs or sites like Pinterest. This makes content discovery a lot easier without readers having to click through page after page to find what they are looking for. It also saves you a page load when all you need to do is load in a few more posts for people to view. In the long run, and when implemented properly, lazy loading can make your site a lot faster and can be a really great experience for your users.
