The top 10 shopping apps on the U.S. App Store added half a million first-time users on Black Friday, up 16.3 percent from the same day in 2017, Sensor Tower Store Intelligence estimates show. Overall new shopping app installs on the platform grew 9 percent year-over-year to approximately 1.8 million.
Amazon topped the ranking of most-installed shopping apps, as it did last year, but runner-up Walmart posted more significant year-over-year-growth. The charts below rank the top 10 overall, brick-and-mortar, and online-only shopping apps for Black Friday 2018.
Amazon added approximately 115,000 new users of its flagship app from the App Store on Black Friday, growing 11.7 percent from 2017. By comparison, Walmart’s app was installed by an estimated 95,000 first-time users on Friday, up 39.7 percent over last year. New Target app installs grew 3.3 percent from 2017 to about 62,000.
Best Buy, the top specialty retail app on the ranking, saw its new installs grow by 34.5 percent over 2017. About 39,000 users downloaded its app for the first time, compared to 29,000 last Black Friday.
Overall, new downloads of the top 10 brick-and-mortar shopping apps were up 24.7 percent over Black Friday 2017, while the cohort of top online-only shopping apps grew approximately 20 percent year-over-year.
